Since 2012, Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology has been participating in a unique program with the School District of Lancaster called Adopt-a-Kindergarten. Starting with Lafayette Elementary School for the first two years, then expanding to Ross Elementary and Washington Elementary in 2014, the College continues to devote multiple resources in to building excitement in the kindergartners toward their education, while at the same time educating them about the fields related to trades and technology.
The program utilizes three key components to help develop its overall mission in the kindergartners at all of the participating schools:
- Classroom Presentations: Faculty members at Thaddeus Stevens College visit the classrooms at each participating school and discuss their particular field. Including hands on activities, tools, and other audio/visual components, instructors are informing the kindergartners about their specific field. Students are able to ask questions and participate fully throughout the presentation.
- Campus Tours: Once the faculty has visited the participating schools, Thaddeus Stevens College invites the kindergartners to the College's campus. While there, students have the chance to see the College library and various classrooms, usually related to the programs they have learned about in their home classrooms. Students are given hard hats, goggles, and a yellow Adopt-a-Kindergarten t-shirt. In addition, the students receive an official Thaddeus Stevens College ID card when they visit. The kindergartners are treated to lunch by the College.
- Graduation: The pinnacle event of the Adopt-a-Kindergarten program is when the students return to the Thaddeus Stevens College campus for their graduation. Students are dressed in small caps and gowns and process to graduation. After hearing from College and school officials, students cross the stage receiving diplomas and keys which symbolize the students key to educational success. Following the graduation program, families and graduates are invited to a lunch provided by the College.
