General Construction Laborer Program Curriculum

GENERAL LAB

Summary --The purpose for this task is to enable the student to understand the purpose and use of various hand and power tools used to complete specific tasks.

Terminal --The student will learn to correctly identify all hand and power tools used in the fields of carpentry, masonry and concrete.

Enabling Objectives -- The student will be given specific tasks that require specific tool(s) to complete.

 

SAFETY
Summary -- The purpose for this task is to educate the student in personal safety equipment and procedures commonly found in the construction workplace.

Terminal -- The student will know what types of personal safety equipment are available to him/her and the proper procedures and specific uses for that equipment.

Enabling Objectives -- The student will be placed in various workplace environments that require specific types of safety equipment and therefore be able to choose the proper equipment.

 

DEMOLITION

Summary -- The purpose for this task is to provide the student with an opportunity to participate in Demo Work.

Terminal -- The Student will know the various types of Demo Equipment and procedures. They will be able to identify the hazardous possibilities prior to beginning a Demo project and what precautions should be taken.

Enabling Objectives -- Each student will participate in the completion of various types of Demo work that will require the use various types of Demo equipment.

 

FORM CONSTRUCTION

Summary -- The purpose for this task is to ensure the student can properly construct a concrete form for multiple concrete applications.

Terminal -- The student will know how to construct concrete forms through solid craftsmanship practices and what types of materials are available to them.

Enabling Objectives-- Each student will be required to construct different types of concrete forms and to properly choose what material should be used in specific concrete applications.

 

SCAFFOLDING

Summary --The purpose for this task is to teach the proper methods, equipment and safety precautions for building, maintaining and removing scaffolding on the construction site.

Terminal -- The student will know how to handle scaffold construction, maintenance, and removal within OSHA standards.

Enabling Objectives -- Each student will be required to build, maintain and remove scaffolding in various terrain, safety and weather conditions.

 

HANDLING MATERIALS

Summary -- The purpose of this task is to instruct the students on the proper methods and equipment used to handle various construction materials.

Terminal -- The student will be able to safely handle materials using both light and heavy equipment.

Enabling Objectives -- Each student will be required to handle materials used in carpentry, masonry and concrete applications. They will be able to identify the safety precautions and procedures necessary to move materials around on the construction site. They will know the various types of equipment available to them and how to operate such equipment.

 

CERTIFICATIONS

Summary -- The purpose for this task is to provide each student with special instructions for several types of large construction equipment and to qualify for a 30 Hr. OSHA Card.

Terminal -- Each student will be able to run special equipment used on the construction site. They will qualify as certified Hydro-Mobile Operators, Boom Lift Operators, Scissors Lift Operators, Fork-Lift Operators and Skid Loader Operators. All of which are commonly used in the fields of masonry, carpentry and concrete construction. Each student will also meet the requirements necessary to obtain a 30 hour OSHA Card.

Enabling Objectives -- Each student will demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills required to meet the specifications needed to become certified operators on heavy construction equipment. They will also meet the standards required by OSHA to receive a 30 hour card.

 

BLUEPRINTS

Summary -- The purpose of this task is to provide each student with the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of the construction blueprint.

Terminal -- Each student will have the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate a set of blueprints.

Enabling Objectives -- Through a building process, each student will demonstrate their ability navigate through and to identify certain parts of a set of blueprints. They will be required to provide scaled drawings of their own to use for their final project.

 

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Summary -- The purpose for this task is to develop within the student a level of crafsmanship that reflects attention to detail and careful planning.

Terminal -- The student will have developed his/her ability to produce quality work in a timely fashion.

Enabling Objectives -- Each student will be given assignments that will challenge them to develop the skills of the craft. Although the overall objective of this course is not to produce skilled tradesmen, it will hold them to a high standard of craftsmanship.
