What skills will a prospective auto tech student need to “bring to the table” to be a success in this highly technical field?
What are the demands that will be placed upon students during their course of study here at Stevens to land that “Gold Collar” job in the automotive field?
- Attendance; we have a strict attendance policy and many days are filled with complex and technical demonstrations to prepare you for the hands-on portions! Future employers want to know if students showed up every day, showed up on time, ready to work with no drug or alcohol problems, and with a positive attitude! You can’t learn anything if you’re not here for the training! Attitude Attitude Attitude!
- Math, Physics, and Science skills. Every system or course we teach requires these skills to fully understand the theory and operating principles. We must then gather data and analyze it to allow diagnosis and only then to perform repairs.
- Mechanical aptitude, & hand skills. Once you actually diagnose the complaint, you still have to repair the vehicle. This still is a 50/50 “Head & Hands partnership!
- Reading skills, whether you read it from a computer screen, or from a shop repair manual, reading skills are a must for interpreting data and the steps to complete a repair. Most OEM shop manuals are written on a 14th grade level!
- Information literacy, not only must we be good readers, but we must know how and where to find system and repair information. As cars and trucks become more and more complex, so will the diagnostic and repair procedures. Practically all information will be in an “Electronic” format, and the step by step procedures will all be “Linked” material. Computer skills will be very important!
- Analytical and problem solving skills, after graduating you will eventually be required to “think on your feet” and solve problems without constant assistance or help! Yet other times you will be expected to work with others in a “team effort” side by side!
