CNSA 122: Telecommunications Technologies for Wide Area Networking (3 Credits)
It is in this course that students will learn how one local area network may be connected to distant local area networks using a variety of possible telecommunications technologies. Circuit switching is contrasted to packet switching as methods for interconnecting LANs is explored. Explanation of telecommunication terminology and acronyms is extensive and includes topics such as the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), LATAs, LECs, COs, POPs, IXCs, etc. Telecommunication technologies that are covered include T1s, Frame Relay, ATM, Sonet, ISDN and the increasing popular broadband technologies DSL and cable Internet. Some overview of firewalls and NAT/PAT is typically included this course. This course can be used as preparation for industry certification exams COMPTIA Network+ and Cisco’s CCNA exam though it is not an official exam preparation course. Prerequisite: CNSA 117
